In front of the "pont couverts" and the Petite France quarter
The Barrage Vauban ("Vauban Dam") was built in 1688 to protect the city and improve its capacity of defense. The new weapons and pieces of artillery made the "pont couverts" bridges from the 13th century obsolete in front of those new threats.
